In Miquiliztli ihuan Ichpochtli
Celebrating the Mexican Day of the Dead («Día de muertos»), I was invited by Quique Ollervides to create this artwork for the exhibition «Mexicanos vivientes» at Cosmo gallery, in Barcelona, Spain (www.galeriacosmo.com). The execution is in pencil plus digital colour over Japanese paper. Rather than rely on traditional «Mexicanesque» imagery, I preferred to work on a more universal, philosophical approach to Death, taking the classic theme of »Der Tod und Das Mädchen« as explored by Dürer, Cranach, Goya, Schubert and other masters. The work features original Gothic calligraphy for the title in Nahuatl.
